Dr Emily Lockwood

Dr Emily Lockwood is the co-chair of the ICN NP/APN educational subgroup, and her current interests include competency development and ICN NP/APN global webinar development for NP/APNs. Dr Lockwood has been a registered advanced nurse practitioner for over 17 years in Ireland at University Hospital Waterford in paediatric and adult emergency nursing. She has taught as an assistant professor in MSc advanced nursing practice programmes.

Drawing on her considerable expertise in advanced nursing practice, Dr Lockwood has contributed to developing ANP competencies at a local and national level for ANP and ANP candidates. Additionally, she developed ANP site development approval and business case approvals for many ANP posts.  

She completed her PhD in 2021 which explored the levels of ANP clinical autonomy. She developed and tested a tool to measure levels of ANP clinical autonomy and also utilised thematic analysis. Emily is an advocate for developing competence, confidence, and autonomy in the teaching of nursing and advanced nursing practice.

Dr Lockwood has provided strategic leadership in curriculum design and enhancement for post-registration continuing education for nurses at University Hospital Waterford. Dr Lockwood regularly lectures and supervises nursing, medical and ANPs in practice and advocates for shared learning within the Multidisciplinary team.

Dr Lockwood is a promoter of a healthcare system that utilises the fullest capacity of creation, digital technology and innovation to reflect new knowledge and insights. Her lecture at the ICN NP/APN Conference in Dublin 2022 will discuss the differences and complexities of NP/APN clinical autonomy, present the main findings of her PhD study and discuss requirements needed for effective implementation of NP/APNs into healthcare systems.
