Prof. Rafat Jan
Professor and the Associate Dean for Outreach and Policy Unit, AKUSONAM

Rafat Jan is currently working as a Professor and the Associate Dean for Outreach and Policy Unit, AKUSONAM. She has been associated with the Aga Khan University (AKU) since 1985.  She is trained as a nurse-midwives and worked as a nurse and midwife educator, practitioner, researcher, and leader. She was the founding Director of the first clinical competency-based BS Midwifery Program in Pakistan.

With her vast expertise and knowledge, she become the president of the Midwifery Association of Pakistan and the first nurse Pakistan Nursing Council (PNC), and also served as the first chair of the BSN curriculum committee in PNC & Higher Education Commission (HEC) to introduced standardized curriculum in Pakistan. She developed several strategic directions at institution and national level for nurses & midwives. She also served in Prime Minister Health Task Force.

Prof Rafat was the first nurse who initiated institution-based helpline as soon as COVID breakdown was announced followed by serving in field hospitals of high mountainous region. She has served in disasters as a volunteer nurse.

She is strong advocate and activist for advance nurse practitioner and advance midwives’ practitioner. She has worked hard to developed modified  PNC ACT (legislation) with few colleagues to give title, definition, and scope of practice for Advance nurse practitioners and clinical nurse specialist to give them legal protection
